Abstract
This thesis is an exploration of how collectors in Qatar have contributed to the development of the artistic ecosystem the country. While Qatar has made headlines in the art world for record auction purchases, museums by starchitects and the use of art and culture in soft power diplomacy, the development of the commercial art ecosystem remains underdeveloped with a few art galleries and a small collector base. Four collectors, have been instrumental in the development of the artistic ecosystem in Qatar. Through interviews, this thesis will explore their contribution to the evolving artistic ecosystem in Qatar. The collectors who will be discussed in this thesis are the following H.E. Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani; H.E. Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed bin Ali Al Thani, Mr. Tariq Al Jaddah and Mr. Ashraf Abu Eissa. Collectively, these individuals have built the start of the components that are need to build the foundations of the commercial artistic ecosystem in Qatar and support the government in their efforts of building the artistic ecosystem in Qatar.
