Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to further study and understand Bosch and his art. This thesis will study Bosch and his art from two aspects. The first aspect is based on Bosch’s life, his artistic style and characteristics. Through the study of this aspect, I would like to answer questions below: why Bosch’s art was popular among collectors of different social classes, especially in the upper class, during the period of the 15th to the 16th century; and although Bosch produced many scenes of hell and plenty of unusual hybrid creatures, he was neither an artist with psychological problems, nor he was a social outsider, which is different from some opinions of scholars. The second aspect of the thesis will analyze the valuation of Bosch’s paintings, so as to understand Bosch’s art more comprehensively from the perspective of the contemporary auction market with the quantitative approach. This research will draw on the knowledge of valuation and appraisal of the contemporary art market, but will adopt some different methods according to the characteristics of Bosch’s art and his market situation.
