Abstract
This text dissects the history of China’s art market from the Cultural Revolution to present day, focusing specifically on the globalization of Chinese Contemporary Art, while examining its contributions to China’s status as the second largest art market and growing intrigue both internationally and domestically. This text conducts a thorough analysis of China's current art market structures in both mainland China and Hong Kong, while expanding upon Government restriction and the effects of censorship within these regions for Chinese Artists. This thesis seeks to provide cultural context into China’s fast-learning framework to becoming a major art hub for galleries, auction houses and art fairs, simultaneously the country’s ability to endure harsh political landscapes, government restrictions and censorship, therefore arguing China’s commercial art success lies within its resilience and ability to persist through sociopolitical uncertainties.
