Abstract
This paper analyses the current state and international positioning of the Spanish contemporary art market, which is 1% of the total global art market, through an individual selection of artists from 1940 to the present. It focuses on its structure, agents, and challenges. Both quantitative and qualitative data have been examined and uploaded, and a total of nine interviews with Spanish art professionals, from galleries, institutions, and other art-related fields. This thesis explores the dynamics that define Spain’s art and cultural ecosystem, highly dynamic locally yet underrepresented internationally. The study examines the global presence of Spanish galleries and artists, the barriers that prevent their expansion such as, institutional frameworks and cultural policies. By combining the market analysis, research findings, and citations from key figures, this paper concludes with the paradox between artistic vitality and structural fragility, and proposes possible solutions towards greater international visibility and competitiveness for Spain’s art market.
