Abstract
This thesis analyzes the current state of the contemporary arts ecosystem in the Republic of Ireland, with a particular focus on Dublin, the largest city and home to nearly half of the country’s population. This paper provides a separate analysis of each sector of the Irish contemporary arts ecosystem (government; museums, galleries, arts spaces, and international exhibitions; the auction market; commercial galleries; the collector base; and contemporary artists), as well as an analysis of the contemporary arts ecosystem as a functioning whole. This
paper includes historical and demographic context specific to Ireland as it assesses the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges which have held the ecosystem back, and those which propel it forward as it, like all ecosystems, continues to evolve and grow.
