Abstract

Orient is a membership-based website and mobile application platform that allows users to educate themselves through the editorial content, share what they have in their collections by creating a collection profile, connect with other members, collectors, artists, and art professionals who share a common interest in and advocating Asian art, and gain first-hand experience of different art markets by participating in pre-arranged offline tours. Acknowledging the increase in international interest and the desire to engage with the Asian art scene, yet the difficulties of navigating the foreign and pre-mature market, Orient aims to break down the barriers such as infrastructural differences, uncertainties, inconvenience, and political and social nuances that hinders the public from becoming an active participant.

Orient perceives the economic growth of the region and the burgeoning Asian art market as an indicator of increase in the pool of potential collectors. Unfortunately, the Asian art market remains nuanced and opaque, making it difficult to navigate for newcomers. Orient will be utilized as a tool to help make the Asian art scene more accessible, ultimately cultivating young future and emerging collectors in their 20s and 30s by increasing their knowledge and confidence in the market. By bringing together a vibrant community of collectors, artists, dealers, gallerists, curators, and other art professionals, Orient will offer opportunities for engagement and networking based on creative learning and active exploring. The educational and social aspects of the platform seeks to help the users discover, inform, inspire, and encourage today’s younger generation of collectors to become future patrons of the arts. For an annual membership fee of $400, the Orient Circle members will enjoy features such as OrientEd, Collection Profile, City Guides, Orient Tours, and more.
