Abstract
I am a Master’s student studying Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, in New York, and this is my project proposal for the integration of Design Thinking into gradeschool education.
When proposing such ‘radical’ ideas into schools, and state-funded institutions, effective change is often met with fear and pushback. When individuals are familiarized with design terms, it is often in higher education. However, I propose that teenagers are just as capable, if not more suitable, to grasp the concepts of Design Thinking, and utilize its abilities, over their older counterparts.
For 12.3% of the population (roughly 39.7 million Americans), the need for critical problem solving is on a basic, and fundamental level1. Beyond serving a need to those in poverty, the integration of Design Thinking into schools can positively impact all individuals. No one is immune to ignorance, but some are better equipped for survival in a capitalist country, regardless of intelligence.
What possibilities could we create for future generations, if we encouraged students to critically think? What improvements would we create in our culture, if we offered the same education opportunities to all children?
