Abstract
The idea of immersion has long been associated with art as an attribute, immersive being a description of art practices over the course of history. In this article, I argue that in the context of contemporary art in our present moment, immersion has shifted from an attribute to an essence, a descriptive term to a noun. Immersive art is recognized as a new genre of art that is truly cross-disciplinary and primarily uses technology to provide experiences to its audience. This article explains the rise of immersive art, its implication on current art scholarship and its outlook. This project is a proposal for October magazine.
