Abstract
Taking inspiration from Cathy Park Hong’s book, Minor Feelings, and the recent explosion of hate crimes against Asian Americans that were fueled not only by longstanding prejudices and racial tensions but also by the rise of white nationalism in the U.S. and former President Trump’s tirades putting blame of COVID-19 against the Chinese, this Exhibit, Minor Feelings: Korean-American Identity and Perspectives, to be shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art, will provide an opportunity to take a deep dive into what “AAPI awareness” really means in the current political and cultural climate by using the Korean-American perspective as a platform. More specifically, the unique history of Korean-Americans in this country will provide the backdrop against which we can delve into deeper contemplations surrounding race and identity. The show will be comprised of fifteen works by six Korean-American artists across generations, navigating four large thematic areas.
