Abstract

This dissertation catalogs a portion of the Rockingham design book recently acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, which comprises over six hundred designs of Biscuit Painting Patterns and China Tea and Dessert Patterns. This research aims to broaden the understanding and appreciation of the pottery, as well as establish the significance of innovation and experimentation in early English porcelain designs. Each catalog entry includes high quality images of the designs as well as comparative analysis with objects made by Rockingham and other factories around the world, bringing further richness to the understanding of the designs.

The dissertation is grounded in theoretical frameworks exploring design influences, key patronage, and the role of the design book in the broader Victoria and Albert collection. By cataloging a portion of the pattern book with a focus on the influences that drove Rockingham artists to innovate and test new ideas, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the creative endeavors of craftsmen in the early 19th century. This project further emphasizes the importance of examining craft and applied arts with a thoroughness that allows for continued research into smaller ceramic factories, which will continue to be highly beneficial for the education and inspiration of contemporary artists and craftsmen.
