Abstract

This dissertation examines how the Chantilly porcelain manufactory evolved its designs throughout the eighteenth century, amidst the changing trends of the French aristocratic aesthetic and the French luxury market’s commercial landscape. The establishment was influenced by a range of factors, including aristocratic patronage, which reduced reliance on imported porcelain and elevated the prestige of French porcelain through domestic production. This dissertation also examines the visual evolution of Chantilly design by exploring the mutual influences between contemporaries and the double influences of Asian and European motifs on the production. Furthermore, this study highlights the role of marchands-merciers and their commercially assembled hybrid pieces using Chantilly pieces, providing a perspective on how the transformed form, decoration, and function of Chantilly designs could be diffused into Rococo interiors and tastes of contemporary customers.
