Abstract

This dissertation investigates Lucy Wertheim’s impact on British modern art by examining her role as a woman gallerist and patron during the interwar period. Due to the scarcity of secondary literature, archival research of The Lucy Wertheim Archive at the Paul Mellon Centre was undertaken as the primary methodology. The research reveals how Wertheim established herself as a woman gallerist in the male-dominated art world of the 1930s. It provides an overview of her exhibition programme, which promoted women artists and the Twenties Group, and considers how it was received. The research also demonstrates how she acted as a patron to artists such as Frances Hodgkins and Basil Rakoczi. By providing the first detailed account of Wertheim’s career and influence, this dissertation addresses gaps in scholarship, highlights overlooked voices and situates Wertheim’s contribution to British modernism.
