Abstract

In the age of globalization, the art world is also constantly evolving. With the growing presence of artists from different ethnicities, multi-cultural backgrounds, the art world is undoubtedly a cultural melting pot.

This dissertation essentially dives into the question of how different social, political, and geographical environments impact on an artist’s career. The subject of the research consists of two cohorts: emerging Chinese artists born and educated in the People’s Republic of China, and emerging Chinese diasporic artists, in particular, the U.S. Despite both cohorts are ethnically Chinese, how do their career trajectories differ, and what might contribute to these differences between their current art markets. By utilising a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews with the artists, the study will gain a rich and in-depth outcome and explore what constitutes their practice in art and what might be their source of inspiration. Moreover, by applying statistics of analysing their exhibition history, it offers an insight into their current market reach, as well as their significance domestically and internationally.

This research provides a refreshing prospective in investigating the emerging artists, since very little comparison has been done previously of these two cohorts. Through interviews and literature review, this study aims to uncover how art market of an artist can be shaped significantly by the environment they live in, both socially and politically.
