Abstract

The Arab culture is known for its traditions, its food, and its craftsmanship; but where may we ever find one place that honors it all outside of North Africa? Carthage is an homage to the Arab world. It is not only an art gallery and a restaurant, but also a social space structured as a membership community club, based on an application process. My Tunisian and Moroccan origins always made me want to honor my heritage by owning a business that would put the beauty of this culture under the spotlight. The goal of this venue would be to gather people that admire these traditions and share a passion for art, fashion, food and music. New York is full of membership clubs but none of them gives the opportunity of being a real community reunited by art, food and culture. Nowadays, when a person hears the term Arab, they often associate it with the Muslim religion, - which makes sense – but which also scares people away because of geopolitical and religious conflicts. The main goal of Carthage is to give the public an accurate picture of what this culture really is about.
